Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said the State government was committed to do
everything required in order to provide equal opportunities for the
physically-challenged.

He was addressing a gathering after unveiling a statue of Louis
Braille on his 202 {+n} {+d} birth anniversary and also after laying
the foundation for Rs. 4.5-crore building complex to house hostels and
offices for the Andhra Pradesh Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation
(APVCC) here. He mentioned how the disability pension was increased
from Rs. 75 to Rs. 500 during the YSR regime in the year 2004.

Mr. Reddy said he would form a special help desk in his office to
monitor issues pertaining to the differently-abled and ensure quick
response. He asked the APVCC officials to put together the statistics
and get back to him with a proposal. Based on their needs, he would
see that a Bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly in the
ensuing budget session.

Earlier, APVCC Chairman Maddela Gangaram wanted government to make the
reservations for the differently-abled on par with those extended to
people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes and an increase in
the budgetary allocation from Rs. 31 crore now, to Rs. 50 crore.

Engineer-in-Chief, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Panduranga
Rao said the Rs. 4.5 crore project was being executed by the
corporation through a contractor. The two complexes to be completed in
a year's time would involve two buildings with a built-up area of
41,348 square feet. They would comprise hostels, APVCC's offices and
meeting halls, he said.
