Treat disabled on a par with SC/STs: HC

New Delhi: The Delhi HC on Tuesday said a physicallychallenged person should be treated on a par with SC/ST candidates, while relaxing qualifying marks for admission in professional courses.
The HC asked the government to consider the recommendations of the chief commissioner for disabilities who had directed all governmentaided institutions to extend the relaxed norms to physically-disabled candidates to bring them on a par with SC/ST candidates.
However, the bench refused relief to a handicapped student who had sought such relaxation for admission to a medical college, saying there is no such provision in law at present. “The disabled persons have a right to reservation, but there is no right to relaxation in the minimum standards,” it said.
