Kiran Bedi takes up cause of differently-abled children

New Delhi (PTI): Taking up the cause of differently-abled children, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has become a goodwill ambassador for a community development
project aimed at making them self-sufficient.

"Children are our investment to build a strong nation. Everybody in the society, be it professionals or businessmen, should give their services to society
so that we can help under-privileged people," Bedi said after launching the 'Spiritual Weaving Project' here on Friday.

Under the project, the children would be taught how to weave small household items like mobile phone covers and mats.

"It will not only help them in attaining self-sufficiency and attract extra income but also guide them in exploring their inner self," Bedi said.

Bedi, who has accepted a proposal to become the goodwill ambassador of the community development project 'Freedom Through Education', said, "It's time that
people thought about helping and encouraging differently-abled children."

She was also handed over a cheque of Rs 1,20,000 as a scholarship fund jointly by the Round Table India and Ladies Circle India.

The two organisations together with Bedi's India Vision Foundation have decided to build two classrooms and a library for 250 students at the Premalabai
Chavan School for the Deaf here.
