Thin is in!

Author: Raisa Simula

The new Macbook Air is setting a new standard for
ultra-thin, ultra-portable, powerful notebooks. But it
comes with a heavy price tag. Raisa Simula checks
out other brands competing in the slim segment

The MacBook Air

Some say that the MacBook Air isn’t powerful enough to
be the primary machine for many users. It also lacks
some desirable features that needed to be left
out to create this classy-looking notebook so slim
you might be able to slide underneath a door.

Height: 0.16 inch to 0.76 inch  Weight: 3.0 pounds
Battery life: Five hours of wireless operating.
Screen size: 13.3-inch LED-backlit screen.
Thumbs up: Really sexy to be seen with.
Thumbs down: Only one USB-port.

Fujitsu LifeBook P7230

This one is actually one of the lightest laptops there
is. Opting for this one, you’ll save money when
compared to the MacBook, Fujitsu’s performance is
not as impressive as Mac’s.

Height: 1.3 inches
Weight: 2.6 pounds
Battery life: 5.2 hours on one charge
Screen size: 10.6 inches
Thumbs up: Cheaper than the Mac
Thumbs down: May not be as impressive as the Mac.

Toshiba Portege R500

Lighter than the actual MacBook, it is also more
expensive but has some features the Mac lacks, like
removable battery, a full-size DVI-video port and
a PC card slot. The LED-backlight display is smaller
than Mac’s, but sufficient for most users.

Height: 0.77 inches thick.
Weight: 2.4 pounds
Battery life: Promises a full workday of normal
computing on a single charge.
Thumbs up: Three USB ports.
Thumbs down: More expensive that the Mac.

HP Pavilion dv9700t

If you don’t mind the “excess” weight on this one, it
is pretty okay value for a regular user. This laptop
has a good-quality in-built webcam with two
microphones and decent speakers well, for a laptop.

Height: 1.23 inches to1.52 inches.
Weight: 7.7 pounds
Battery life: Up to 3 hours, 30 minutes.
Thumbs up: Blu-ray DVD player.
Thumbs down: Slightly heavy to lug around.

Dell XPS M1530

Dell’s older laptops have been too heavy and bulky for
some consumer’s taste. This is the company’s attempt
to shake that reputation off. It is still heavy
compared to the MacBook.

Height: 0.93 inches to 1.38 inches.
Weight: 5.78 pounds
Battery life: 3 hours and 30 minutes with a 9-cell
Thumbs up: Fingerprint reader for extra security.
Thumbs down: According to some users, the hard drive
makes too much noise.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61p

Might outperform a lot of laptops but at the same time
has some useless software on it. This could be more
suitable for a hard-core businessman than the
sexier looking MacBook.

Height: 1.4 inches
Weight: 6 pounds
Battery life: 3 hours and 20 minutes with 9-cell
Thumbs up: High-end components make it ideal for
business people.
Thumbs down: Warranty lasts only a year.
